MS Updates Fail to Install

I recently installed a new hard drive after my old one died. I properly loaded XP and installed the drivers (in order) from the MS home pages. Everything seems to work - MS Office, games, Internet, email. However, I cannot install any updates. When I goto the MS Update site, the site evaluates my machine and properly informs me of the various updates needed. I can download the updates but will get an error message (failed to install) when I attempt to install.
Any suggestions?
